<h2>Row order is no longer guaranteed</h2>
<p>The streaming engine doesn’t preserve row order for operations like <code>join</code>, <code>group_by</code>, and <code>unpivot</code>. If your pipeline depends on incidental row ordering — and plenty do, even when you don’t realize it — things can break silently.</p>
<p>The fix is straightforward: sort explicitly where order matters, or pass <code>maintain_order=True</code> to the relevant operations. If you need the old behavior across the board, you can revert to the in-memory engine via the engine affinity setting.</p>
<h2>Stricter defaults throughout</h2>
<p>The major version bump also comes with stricter behavior in a few areas that previously let bad data slide:</p>

<p>Starting in 3.15, UTF-8 is the default everywhere. This affects:</p>

<p>If your library accepts an <code>encoding</code> parameter and defaults to <code>None</code>, wrap it with <code>io.text_encoding()</code> before passing it downstream. This ensures that any <code>EncodingWarning</code> points at the caller’s code rather than your library internals.</p>

Every output node turns into a named endpoint you can hit with the Gradio client or just plain curl, no extra API-building step required.</p>
<p>And deployment is a single command to push the whole workflow to Hugging Face Spaces. So the path from prototype to something other people (or other services) can actually call is short.</p>

<p>Sentence Transformers v6.0 shipped with something I’ve wanted for a while: native support for multi-vector, ColBERT-style late interaction models. There’s now a fourth model type, <code>MultiVectorEncoder</code>, sitting alongside the existing dense, sparse, and reranker types, all under the same familiar API.</p>
<h2>What’s actually new</h2>
<p>Instead of squashing an entire passage into a single vector, late interaction models keep one embedding per token. At query time, you score a query against a document using MaxSim: for each query token, find its best-matching document token, then sum those max scores. It’s a small conceptual shift but it changes a lot about how retrieval works in practice.</p>
<p>The new encoder loads checkpoints from PyLate, Stanford NLP’s ColBERT, and colpali-engine, so you’re not locked into one training framework. That’s a big deal — PyLate in particular has become the go-to option for training multi-vector models on top of Sentence Transformers, so having first-class support here closes the loop nicely.</p>
<p>One checkpoint worth calling out: <a href="http://Answer.AI" target="_blank" rel="noopener nofollow">Answer.AI</a>’s ColBERT model. It’s only 30M parameters, runs fast, and is now trivially easy to load and query locally in Python. No exotic infra required, just an index you can build and search on your own machine.</p>

<h2>Why this matters to me</h2>
<p>I’ll be blunt: retrieval is the one corner of ML where we’ve stubbornly clung to the idea that a single dot product between two fixed-size vectors is an acceptable scoring function. That assumption quietly couples how much compute you spend at search time to how big your embeddings need to be — which is a strange trade to be locked into. The practical result is that people keep cranking up embedding dimensionality just to squeeze out marginal gains, when the real fix is spending more compute <em>at search time</em> instead.</p>

Python Software Foundation holds first election for new Packaging Council

<p>Python just got its first-ever Packaging Council, and the race for five seats is less about politics and more about a very specific, very technical gripe: PyPI still can’t tell you if the wheel you downloaded actually matches the source code it claims to come from.</p>
<p>The PSF put out 17 candidates for the inaugural Python Packaging Council (PPC). The mechanics are a bit unusual: the top two vote-getters lock in two-year terms (Cohort A), the next three get one-year terms (Cohort B), and from there the cohorts alternate every two years. PSF voting members have until August 25 to affirm they intend to vote, with the actual election running September 1 through September 15 on OpaVote.</p>
<p>The candidate statement getting the most attention is Brett Cannon’s, and it’s worth reading not because he’s a big name (23 years as a core dev, five terms on the steering council, co-maintainer of the <code>packaging</code> project for 7 years, co-author of PEP 518 and PEP 751) but because he’s using his nomination to lay out an actual technical thesis: Python packaging has no real story for reproducible builds.</p>
<p>His argument, in short: you can’t currently verify that a distribution’s bits match its source, which is exactly the kind of gap that let the SolarWinds compromise happen. He points to three specific holes. Sdists and wheels don’t reliably record where the source came from, direct_url.json only helps for source installs. Wheels can attach an SBOM under PEP 770, but sdists, being simple tarball-plus-PKG-INFO files, have nothing equivalent. And build backends don’t record their own environment, so nobody can actually replay a build from a pyproject.toml.</p>
<p>His fix is refreshingly low-drama: let trusted third parties attempt to reproduce a build and report success back to PyPI, surfaced through the index API. He’s explicit that this should work like an opt-in badge, roughly SLSA build level 1, not a public shaming list for maintainers who haven’t gotten around to it yet.</p>
<p>The rest of his platform reads like a to-do list pulled straight from steering council experience: help stand up the PPC’s actual processes, close the gap between spec and what uv already does in practice, and push supply-chain security forward without dumping more maintenance burden on volunteer maintainers.</p>
<p>Worth watching whether other candidates pick up the reproducible-builds thread or if it stays a Cannon-specific platform. Either way, it’s the first real technical fight of an election that’s mostly been process announcements so far.</p>
