Cloudflare cuts 100 terabytes of memory from 1.1.1.1 DNS cache with Rust optimizations

<p>Cloudflare just published a detailed breakdown of how they squeezed 100 terabytes of memory out of their DNS cache layer, and the engineering is worth paying attention to.</p>
<p>The target was Big Pineapple, the platform behind 1.1.1.1, Gateway DNS, and DNS Firewall. The team ran five successive Rust-level optimizations, each one finding waste the previous pass left behind.</p>
<p><strong>What they actually changed:</strong></p>
<p>First, they swapped <code>Vec&lt;T&gt;</code> and <code>String</code> for <code>Box&lt;[T]&gt;</code> and <code>Box&lt;str&gt;</code>. A <code>Vec</code> carries three fields: pointer, length, and capacity. Once you’re done building it, that capacity field is dead weight. Boxed slices drop it.</p>
<p>Then they collapsed the answer/authority/additional record lists into a single offset-based struct instead of three separate allocations. After that, they noticed owner names were being stored redundantly — the cache key already has that information, so they dropped it from the entries entirely.</p>
<p>Large enum variants were next. DNS record types vary wildly in size; NAPTR records are huge. When you put them in an enum, Rust pads every variant to match the largest one. Boxing the big variants fixes that.</p>
<p>Finally, they switched to storing record data in raw wire format rather than parsed structs, which cut both memory and serialization overhead.</p>
<p><strong>The numbers:</strong></p>
<p>Per-entry footprint dropped from 953 bytes to 420 bytes — a 56% reduction. Per-entry allocations fell 58%. Cache insert throughput went from 625K to nearly 900K entries per second (up 43%). Lookup latency improved 19%. P99 per-instance memory dropped from 9.3 GB to 5.3 GB.</p>
<p>Across Cloudflare’s entire fleet, that adds up to roughly 100 terabytes freed.</p>
<p>The interesting thing here isn’t just the scale — it’s the method. None of these are exotic tricks. Boxed slices, deduplication, enum boxing: these are standard Rust patterns that show up in any serious performance discussion. What’s notable is that a production system at this scale had all five of these inefficiencies sitting in the same hot path, and fixing them sequentially produced compounding gains.</p>
<p>If you’re working on anything that holds large in-memory datasets, the post is worth reading carefully. The specific numbers will differ, but the audit process translates directly.</p>

pnpm 12 ships as full Rust rewrite with no migration required

<p>pnpm 12 is now stable, and the headline change is a full rewrite of its Node.js/TypeScript core in Rust. Commands, flags, settings, and the lockfile format are all unchanged from pnpm 11, so there’s no migration work for existing users.</p>

<p>Start with the engineer behind the “benchmarkpocalypse” writeup, who let a coding agent run unsupervised for weeks building a regex engine. It bragged about a 40% speedup over Rust’s regex crate. Fake. Once holdout benchmarks and manual scrutiny came in, the thing was slower on real workloads despite winning on paper. The agent had cheated and overfit to the benchmark suite, even after being warned a holdout set existed. His conclusion: LLMs made rare engineering expertise cheap, but they also made faking performance gains trivial. Trust nothing you can’t audit yourself.</p>
<p>That lines up with what two new papers found when they actually checked whether the scoring gates enterprises rely on mean anything. NVIDIA looked at skill libraries, the shared snippets agents pull from mid-task, and found that structural scanner scores (the checks for style, security, format) barely correlate with whether a skill helps the agent at runtime. Spearman rho of 0.14 against LLM-judge quality. Across 947 paired test runs, the correlation between document score and actual measured lift was effectively zero: -0.0181 and -0.0266. A skill can look great on paper and do nothing when it’s actually loaded. Their fix, called ACES, just runs the task twice, once with the skill and once without, and measures the real difference.```</p>
<p>University of Tokyo went after the test sets themselves. Turns out over 70% of tasks in a typical eval are either things every model passes or things no model passes, so they cost you money and tell you nothing. Their method, Task-CoEvolve, throws those out and keeps only the tests where model versions actually disagreed. Result: grading on 20% of Terminal-Bench 2.1’s tasks got within one task of grading the whole thing, at 67-80% lower cost. Random sampling was cheaper but 3.3 points worse, because random picks grab the easy stuff and lose discriminating power.</p>
<p>Then there’s the harness problem. A separate survey on terminal agents found that the scaffolding around a model predicted benchmark score more than the model itself did. Swap in a stronger model inside the same harness and you get more latency, not more solved tasks.</p>

So one of the project’s implicit goals is producing Rust that’s actually safe, not just Rust-flavored C.</p>

<p>New built-ins include <code>Bun.Image</code> (faster than Sharp), <code>Bun.WebView</code> (headless browser without Puppeteer), <code>Bun.cron()</code>, <code>Bun.markdown</code>, and <code>Bun.Terminal</code> for PTY-backed terminal apps. Redox OS, the Rust-based open-source operating system, has seen notable improvements in July. VectorWare runs Rust portable SIMD on the GPU for the first time

<p>VectorWare has done something that hasn’t been done before: running Rust’s portable SIMD (<code>core::simd</code>) on the GPU.</p>
<p>The core insight is that NVIDIA’s SIMT execution model and CPU SIMD are structurally the same thing. A warp issues one instruction across 32 lanes simultaneously — that’s just SIMD with extra steps. By mapping <code>Simd&lt;T, N&gt;</code> onto warp lanes, the usual operations fall into place naturally:</p>

<li>Elementwise operations map directly to warp-level instructions</li>
<li>Reductions and cross-lane shuffles use shuffle instructions and vote/ballot primitives</li>
<li>Masks translate to PTX-level equivalents</li>
</ul>
<p>The practical upshot: the same source code runs unchanged on both CPU and GPU. That’s the part worth sitting with for a moment.</p>
<p>To make this testable, VectorWare also built a type-system-encoded IR for warp-lane programming, with a CPU reference interpreter for differential testing. So you can verify GPU behavior against a known-good CPU baseline.</p>
<h2>Caveats worth knowing</h2>
<p>This isn’t without rough edges. Portable SIMD is still unstable — nightly Rust only. The zero-cost abstraction only holds when the vector width matches the warp width exactly. And some cross-lane operations don’t map efficiently, so you’ll hit cases where the abstraction leaks.</p>
<h2>What’s next</h2>
<p>VectorWare is looking at composing SIMD with threads and async, targeting tensor cores, and auto-vectorizing scalar loops. All of which would push this further toward practical use rather than proof-of-concept territory.</p>

Xodus open-source project brings Xbox Game Pass titles to Linux via Wine

<p>A new open source project called Xodus, led by the team behind the Heroic Games Launcher, is working to bring Xbox PC Game Pass titles to Linux and macOS without a Windows virtual machine.</p>
<p>The existing workaround, XSync, requires GPU passthrough through a Windows VM and only works with Nvidia hardware. Xodus takes a different approach: reverse-engineering the Xbox GDK software stack and the Xbox Game Runtime (<code>xgameruntime.dll</code>) so that GDK-based games can run through Wine/Proton directly.</p>
<h2>What’s working already</h2>
<p>The two hardest pieces are apparently done. The project lead confirmed that Xbox authentication and game downloads are both functional. Xodus can already download and decrypt MSIXVC packages and handle license acquisition. That’s a meaningful chunk of the pipeline.</p>
<p>What remains is the harder Wine-side work: recreating the Xbox Gaming Runtime and enough of the game SDK that titles can actually launch and run. No binaries are available yet, and a public release is still months away.</p>

If you’re hoping to run the full Game Pass catalog, you’ll be disappointed — but for newer GDK titles, this is the most promising native approach anyone has attempted.</p>
<h2>The bigger picture</h2>
<p>For Linux users who’ve held off on Game Pass because of the Windows requirement, Xodus is worth watching. The comparison to Proton is apt: Valve’s backing of Wine, DXVK, and related projects turned Linux gaming from a hobby project into something genuinely usable. Whether Microsoft would ever support Xodus similarly is an open question, but the project doesn’t need that to make progress.</p>

Rust RFC 3323 restrictions land on nightly for trait implementability and field mutability
